In situ measurements, remote sensing, modelling, long-range transport, and impacts of HLD and low-latitude dust in the Arctic, with an emphasis on CAMS User engagement in Iceland.
The 10th HLD Workshop with CAMS session and the 2nd Dust-art exhibition were held in Reykjavik on 11-12 February 2026 and focused on in-situ measurements, remote sensing, modelling, long-range transport, and impacts of HLD and low-latitude dust in the Arctic, especially on clouds and cryosphere, Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) in Iceland/Arctic, and global dust networks.

The role and observations of air pollutants such as Black Carbon, SO2, volcanic ash, microplastics, dust, and biomass-burning emissions in high-latitude environments were also presented. It was organised by the Agricultural University of Iceland in Reykjavik, the ICEDUST Association, the CAMS National Collaboration Programme Iceland, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, UArctic Thematic Network on HLD, and the Czech University of Life Sciences.
The 10th Edition (2016-2026)
Scientists and artists from 10 countries contributed 27 presentations on current research on all aspects of HLD and Arctic air pollutants, modelling and remote sensing, and unique HLD-art techniques and dust-generated music to the hybrid Workshop this year. About 80 attendees from 20 countries followed the event during both days.
The most discussed topics were:
The 3rd CAMS session in Iceland/Arctic was organised and led to multidisciplinary discussions and approaches on aerosol and air pollution environmental issues, monitoring and available forecasts/products in Iceland with experts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the World Meteorological Organization Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (WMO SDS WAS), Hygeos, the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia, NASA, and the University of Belgrade. Additional meetings were also organised for on-site members of the UArctic Thematic Network on HLD and the IceDust Association. The HLD Remote Sensing Expert Group was established at the end of the Workshop to summarise the current challenges in HLD remote sensing.
The 2nd Dust-art exhibition, featuring online presentations, was the highlight of the 10th anniversary of the HLD Workshop. Three artists presented their dust art. Two artists showcased works using unique methods to incorporate Icelandic dusts of different origins into fascinating prints of ancient Icelandic forest trunks and lava stone shapes from the Askja stratovolcano eruption. The dust protocol was the project of the third artist creating dust electro-opera music. The exhibition was successfully presented both online and on-site, where many non-dust stakeholders visited it.
The 10th HLD Workshop was dedicated to Professor Joanna Bullard from Loughborough University in the UK, who recently passed away and was a pioneer of High Latitude Dust research.

About the artists
Emilia Telese is a multimedia artist based in Iceland. She uses earth and loam from emotionally and environmentally significant places to make work, pushing the boundaries of printmaking and performance. Her works, including Icelandic dust, will be part of the Workshop.
Dust Forest (2025) was an immersive printmaking art installation by artist and researcher Dr Emilia Telese at the Royal Festival Hall, London, in October 2025, using dust from Icelandic dust hotspots, collected by Dr Pavla Dagsson-Waldhauserovà. In this paper, Dr Emilia Telese discusses the use of paper as a tertiary memory vessel and dust as a non-linear chronicle, referencing Bernhard Stiegler’s ideas about memory in relation to technical supports that exist beyond the human body.
Beata Katerina Spacilova is a multimedia artist and university educator. She teaches at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno and at the Faculty of Informatics at Masaryk University. In addition to BRNO ŠIJE, she founded an open-screen-printing workshop called BRNO TISKNE.
Stones talk too much!
Lava rocks at the very centre of dust storms are silent witnesses to natural changes. It sits quietly. It is results presentation of an interdisciplinary project from trips to the desert.
